Network cable categories and classes
Network cables and classesNetwork cables are classified in different category standards (CAT). The higher the number of the standard, the type of shielding and the construction, the better data rate (bit rate) and stability you get, especially over longer distances. This can be directly translated to what connection and speed the cable is able to handle, both on an internal network or to the Internet.• CAT 5e UTP for simple installations and the price is very low.
• CAT 6 UTP for the common home installation
• CAT 6 S/FTP and CAT 6aCAT 6a S/FTP for the professional network installation in companies
• CAT 7 and CAT8 a> for installations with very high data rates, e.g. HDMI via network (HDbaseT) or if you just want to be as future-proof as possible.
