The second generation is built around a bit-perfect DAC from Cirrus Logic and supports high-resolution audio up to PCM 384 kHz and DSD256.A key upgrade is the balanced circuitry and balanced 4.4 mm headphone output. It delivers up to 5.57 V and 484 mW RMS at 64 Ohm, while the unbalanced 6.3 mm output delivers up to 3.02 V and 286 mW RMS at 32 Ohm. This provides a choice between balanced headphones with a 4.4 mm connector and traditional headphones with a 6.3 mm connection. Cirrus Logic DAC for high-resolution music:The new Cirrus Logic DAC forms the foundation of the ZEN Air DAC 2 and operates bit-perfect with the supported digital audio formats. The DAC handles PCM up to 384 kHz as well as DSD256, allowing the unit to be used for high-resolution music files from compatible digital sources.The technical audio specifications include a dynamic range of 118 dBA and a signal-to-noise ratio of 118 dBA on both headphone outputs. The frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 90 kHz at -3 dB. THD+N is specified at no more than 0.0011% on the 6.3 mm output at 1.27 V and 16 Ohm, and no more than 0.0015% on the 4.4 mm output at 2.4 V and 32 Ohm. XBass+ and PowerMatch for different headphones:XBass+ and PowerMatch on the front panel allow the analogue section of the signal path to be adjusted. XBass+ operates as an analogue low-shelf filter that boosts low frequencies when additional energy in the bass range is desired. The processing takes place in the analogue circuitry.PowerMatch adjusts the gain to suit headphone sensitivity and can be used when headphones require a higher level from the amplifier. Combined with the increased output power, this makes the ZEN Air DAC 2 flexible when paired with different headphones. A dedicated power button on the front also makes it possible to switch off the unit without disconnecting cables. Updated midnight blue enclosure:The ZEN Air DAC 2 retains the compact ZEN Air format, while the second generation adds a midnight blue finish and a metal front panel. The enclosure measures 3.5 x 10 x 15.8 cm and weighs 315 g, allowing the DAC to take up minimal space in a stationary audio setup.In addition to the headphone amplifier, the unit features a line output with a 2 V output voltage and up to 3.4 V with variable gain. The ZEN Air DAC 2 therefore combines digital-to-analogue conversion, headphone amplification and analogue sound adjustment in one compact unit.
