Detailed tracking with a Microlinear stylus:

The Audio-Technica AT33xMLB is a dual moving coil MC cartridge designed for detailed and precise vinyl record tracking. The nude Microlinear stylus closely follows the fine structures of the record groove, allowing subtle musical details to be retrieved from the recording. The design is particularly well suited to complex recordings where clear separation between instruments is important.

The stylus is mounted on a solid, tapered boron cantilever. The high rigidity of the material contributes to rapid transmission of vibrations from the record groove to the cartridge generator system. The AT33xMLB also uses separate PCOCC coils for the left and right channels. The coils are positioned at the cantilever fulcrum and work together with a neodymium magnet and permendur yoke. This design provides 27 dB channel separation at 1 kHz and an output voltage of 0.42 mV.

Suspension and cartridge body focused on resonance control:

The AT33xMLB features a newly developed suspension mechanism with piano wire and a rubber damper. The design has a dynamic compliance of 6 x 10?6 cm/dyne at 100 Hz and is engineered for precise tracking of the record groove. A dual-stage armature design also increases cantilever rigidity and helps control resonance.

The cartridge body is constructed from three different materials: die-cast zinc, aluminium and a high-rigidity polymer. These materials are combined to reduce and disperse resonance throughout the body rather than allowing specific resonant frequencies to dominate playback. The dense and rigid zinc base also suppresses unwanted vibrations. The terminal pins feature thick gold plating to reduce contact resistance between the cartridge and its connections.

Practical installation with threaded mounting holes:

Installation is simplified by two integrated M2.6 threaded holes in the cartridge body. The screws can therefore be fastened directly into the cartridge without separate nuts, which is particularly practical when mounting on integrated headshells and tonearms where space around the cartridge may be limited.

The recommended tracking force is 2.0 g, with an operating range of 1.8 to 2.2 g. The cartridge has a recommended load impedance of at least 100 Ohm when used with a suitable head amplifier and offers a frequency response from 20 to 45,000 Hz. With a weight of 10.1 g and compact dimensions, its key mechanical and electrical specifications can be used to assess compatibility with a specific tonearm and MC phono setup.
