Detailed MC cartridge with Microlinear stylus:

The Audio-Technica AT33xMLD is a Moving Coil cartridge from the AT33x series, developed with a focus on warm, full-bodied reproduction combined with a high level of detail. The cartridge uses a Nude Microlinear stylus that tracks the record groove with high precision and retrieves fine information from the groove. The stylus is mounted on a tapered tubular duralumin cantilever, where the high rigidity contributes to excellent control, including at high frequencies.

The AT33xMLD features a newly developed suspension mechanism with piano wire and a dynamic compliance of 6 x 10-6 cm/dyne at 100 Hz. The design provides slightly lower dynamic compliance than other Audio-Technica cartridges and is designed to work with a wide range of tonearms. The recommended tracking force is 2.0 g, with a specified operating range of 1.8-2.2 g.

Separate coils and efficient magnetic design:

The dual Moving Coil design uses separate PCOCC coils for the left and right channels. PCOCC stands for Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting and is used here to provide clean and smooth signal transmission. Channel separation is specified at 27 dB at 1 kHz, while the output voltage is 0.4 mV at 1 kHz and 5 cm/sec.

The magnetic circuit consists of a neodymium magnet and permendur yoke, creating a strong magnetic field and contributing to efficient signal generation. The frequency response extends from 20 to 42,000 Hz. The cartridge has a coil impedance of 12 Ohm at 1 kHz, and the recommended load impedance is at least 100 Ohm when connected to a suitable MC phono input or phono preamplifier.

Resonance-controlled body and easy mounting:

The body is constructed from three different materials: die-cast zinc, aluminium and a high-rigidity polymer. These materials are combined to reduce and disperse resonance throughout the cartridge structure, preventing individual resonant frequencies from dominating playback. The dense, rigid zinc base also helps suppress unwanted vibrations, particularly with the aim of providing controlled reproduction in the midrange and lower frequencies.

Installation is simplified by two integrated M2.6 threaded mounting holes. The cartridge can therefore be secured with two screws without separate nuts, which is particularly useful for tonearms with an integrated headshell. The connection pins feature thick gold plating to reduce contact resistance. The AT33xMLD weighs 10.1 g and measures 1.61 x 1.66 x 2.61 cm (H x W x L).
