True Mono design for mono records:

The Audio-Technica AT33xMONO/II is a Moving Coil cartridge developed specifically for monophonic playback. Its True Mono design uses two moving coils that generate electrical signals from the horizontal movement of the stylus in the record groove. Vertical noise components picked up from the groove therefore do not contribute to the signal in the same way. The result is clear mono reproduction with reduced surface noise and greater substance in the lower frequencies.

The dual mono coil design also makes the cartridge suitable for playing mono records through a stereo system. PCOCC coils, a samarium-cobalt magnet and a pure iron yoke work together to provide efficient signal generation and clean signal transmission. The construction is optimised for monophonic reproduction and is particularly well suited to preserving the warmth and body of acoustic recordings, including mono jazz recordings from the 1950s and 1960s.

Nude conical stylus and newly developed suspension:

The AT33xMONO/II uses a nude conical stylus with a radius of 0.65 mil. The conical profile is well suited to tracking the consistent width and depth of mono record grooves. The stylus is mounted on a duralumin pipe cantilever designed for responsive and stable tracking.

A newly developed suspension with piano wire and a rubber damper gives the cartridge a dynamic compliance of 6 × 10^-6 cm/dyne at 100 Hz. The relatively firm construction is designed for precise tracking and contributes to greater substance in the midrange and lower frequencies. The recommended tracking force is 2.5 g, with a specified operating range of 2.3-2.7 g.

Body designed for controlled resonance:

The cartridge body combines die-cast zinc, aluminium and a high-rigidity polymer. The materials are arranged to reduce and disperse resonances throughout the construction, preventing individual frequency ranges from being unnecessarily emphasised. The die-cast zinc base provides high mass and rigidity, helping to suppress unwanted vibrations and support balanced reproduction, particularly in the midrange and bass.

Installation is simplified by integrated M2.6 threaded mounting holes. The cartridge can therefore be secured with two screws without separate nuts, which is also practical when installing it on headshells integrated into the tonearm. The connection pins feature thick gold plating to reduce contact resistance.
