True Mono design for mono records:

The Audio-Technica AT33xMONO/I is a Moving Coil cartridge developed specifically for monophonic vinyl playback. Its True Mono design uses two moving coils that generate electrical signals from the horizontal movement of the stylus in the record groove. Vertical movement, which can include noise components from the record surface, therefore does not contribute to the electrical signal in the same way. The result is more focused reproduction of the mono signal, with reduced surface noise and greater substance in the midrange and bass.

The dual mono coil design also makes the AT33xMONO/I suitable for playing mono records through a stereo system. The cartridge has an output voltage of 0.42 mV at 1 kHz and 5 cm/sec., while the horizontal/vertical output ratio is specified at 25 dB at 1 kHz.

Nude conical stylus and new suspension:

The AT33xMONO/I uses a nude conical stylus with a curvature radius of 0.65 mil. The conical profile is well suited to the consistent width and depth of monophonic record grooves and contributes to stable tracking. The stylus is mounted on a high-rigidity duralumin pipe cantilever, which tapers towards the stylus tip to reduce mass and improve response.

Audio-Technica has also developed a new suspension mechanism using piano wire and a rubber damper. The design provides a dynamic compliance of 6 x 10-6 cm/dyne at 100 Hz and is tuned for accurate tracking as well as full-bodied reproduction in the midrange and lower frequencies. The recommended tracking force ranges from 2.0 to 2.4 g, with 2.2 g as the standard setting.

Resonance control and efficient signal generation:

The cartridge body is constructed from die-cast zinc, aluminium and a high-rigidity polymer. These materials are arranged to reduce and disperse resonance throughout the structure, helping prevent individual frequency ranges from being unnecessarily emphasised. The dense die-cast zinc base suppresses unwanted vibrations and supports natural reproduction, particularly in the midrange and bass.

The signal is generated by PCOCC coils, with copper produced using the Ohno Continuous Casting process. Combined with a neodymium magnet and a permendur yoke shaped for monophonic reproduction, this creates a strong magnetic field and efficient signal generation. The connection pins also feature thick gold plating to reduce contact resistance.

Easy installation with threaded holes:

The AT33xMONO/I features two integrated M2.6 threaded holes, allowing the cartridge to be installed directly with screws without separate nuts. This simplifies installation, particularly on tonearms with an integrated headshell where access from above may be limited. Mounting screws in several lengths, washers, a non-magnetic screwdriver, brush and protector are included.

The cartridge weighs 10.1 g and measures 1.61 x 1.66 x 2.61 cm (H x W x L). The recommended load impedance is at least 100 Ohm when connected to a suitable MC input or head amplifier.

Brand description - Audio-Technica

Audio-TechnicaFounded in 1962 by Hideo Matsushita, Audio-Technica positioned itself immediately as a leader in the manufacture and design of innovative audio products - Its expertise in innovation quickly spread to various new fields and led to the development of tone arms, microphones and headphones. Audio-Technica soon became a benchmark in those fields. Making history.

A self-made man and audiophile, Hidéo Matsushita was the former Director of the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art. It all started in his workshop, with the hand crafting of stereo cartridges. 50 years later, Audio-Technica has become a global leader in audio innovation.
