The two cartridge types produce different signal levels and therefore require different levels of amplification. On the ZEN Air Phono 2, the appropriate gain setting can be selected to match the cartridge in use.A separate phono preamplifier handles the very low-level signal from the turntable cartridge before sending it on to the rest of the audio system. Noise levels and precise amplification are particularly important at this stage, as even small deviations can affect the final result. The ZEN Air Phono 2 is designed with this part of the signal chain in mind and features a symmetrical channel layout that, according to iFi, contributes to lower noise, higher output and improved channel separation. Accurate RIAA equalisation:Music on a vinyl record is stored using an inverse RIAA curve. During playback, the phono preamplifier must correct this curve to restore the proper frequency balance. The ZEN Air Phono 2 uses an RIAA playback curve with a tolerance of ±0.15 dB across the range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.Precise equalisation is essential for accurate vinyl reproduction because the phono stage must both amplify the cartridge's low-level signal and perform RIAA correction. With a specified frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz at ±0.15 dB, the ZEN Air Phono 2 is designed to keep deviations small throughout the audible frequency range. Reduces rumble without removing deep bass:Warped and uneven vinyl records can create very low-frequency movement that results in unwanted rumble during playback. The ZEN Air Phono 2 features iFi's intelligent subsonic filter, developed specifically to address this type of interference.The filter uses the difference between vertical and lateral information in the record groove to identify low-frequency movement caused by record warping. According to iFi, this rumble is filtered without attenuating low bass or adding group delay. This means the filter can be used with problematic records where mechanical movement could otherwise affect playback, while preserving the bass information contained in the recording itself. Low noise for delicate vinyl signals:A cartridge signal is very weak, which places high demands on the noise performance of the phono stage. The ZEN Air Phono 2 is designed to amplify these low signal levels while adding as little noise as possible. For MM, the signal-to-noise ratio is specified at 86 dB A-weighted with 40 dB gain, while the manufacturer specifies Equivalent Input Noise at 6.5 nV/vHz unweighted and -126 dBV A-weighted.The MC setting operates at a higher gain of 64 dB and is designed for Moving Coil cartridges that require greater amplification. Here, Equivalent Input Noise is specified at 0.6 nV/vHz unweighted and -146 dBV A-weighted. The combination of separate MM/MC amplification, precise RIAA equalisation and low noise makes the ZEN Air Phono 2 suitable as a dedicated phono stage between a compatible turntable and a downstream analogue audio system.
