Its slim aluminium housing measures just 10.2 x 7 x 1.4 cm and weighs 135 g, making it easy to carry together with a pair of headphones or IEMs.Digital signal processing is handled by a 16-core XMOS chip combined with a Burr-Brown DAC. The hip-dac 3 supports PCM and DXD up to 384 kHz as well as DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256. Full MQA decoding is also supported. The USB-C data input uses an asynchronous design, allowing the DAC rather than the connected source to handle data timing. Balanced output and adjustment for different headphones:Headphones can be connected via the 4.4 mm balanced output or the 3.5 mm S-Balanced output. The fully balanced circuit design delivers up to 400 mW at 32 Ohm and 6.3 V at 600 Ohm through the 4.4 mm output. Through the 3.5 mm output, it delivers up to 280 mW at 32 Ohm and 3.2 V at 600 Ohm.Different headphones place very different demands on an amplifier, so the hip-dac 3 provides several adjustment options. PowerMatch increases gain by 10 dB and can be used when headphones require additional amplification. For sensitive in-ear monitors, iEMatch can reduce the output level, providing finer control over listening volume while reducing audible hiss. iEMatch can be used with both 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm headphones. Analogue XBass and updated circuitry:XBass makes it possible to compensate for a lack of bass response directly in the analogue domain. This means bass is adjusted without digital signal processing, and the function can be switched on or off as required.For the third generation of the hip-dac, iFi has also updated the internal circuitry. New metal-film capacitors are used with the aim of improving frequency response, while an updated version of iFi's GMT circuitry works together with a new crystal oscillator to reduce phase noise. The specified frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 45 kHz at -3 dB. USB-C and battery operation for portable use:The hip-dac 3 has separate USB-C connections for digital audio data and charging. This allows a modern USB-C connection to be used for the audio source while the built-in lithium-polymer battery powers the DAC and headphone amplifier. The battery has a capacity of 2,200 mAh and provides up to 12 hours of playback depending on factors such as headphone type and listening level.The USB-C data input supports audio up to 32-bit/384 kHz. Android devices can connect via USB-C to USB-C when supported by the operating system. Apple devices with Lightning require a suitable Lightning to USB camera adapter. The combination of battery operation, compact dimensions and two headphone outputs makes the hip-dac 3 suitable as an external DAC and headphone amplifier for both portable and computer-based playback.
