Slim 2.5-way floorstanding speaker with four carbon fibre drivers:

The Scansonic MB5 B is a floorstanding speaker based on a 2.5-way design, with several compact drivers working together in a slim cabinet. The design combines four 5.25" carbon fibre drivers with a sealed ribbon tweeter and offers a specified frequency range of 29 Hz to 40 kHz.

The carbon fibre drivers divide the work between the midrange and bass, while the crossover controls the transition between the different operating ranges. The crossover frequencies are 250 Hz and 2600 Hz. This allows the MB5 B to utilise multiple drivers in the demanding bass range, while the ribbon tweeter handles the upper part of the frequency spectrum.

Ribbon tweeter and controlled frequency distribution:

The sealed ribbon tweeter is a central element of the MB5 B and works together with the carbon fibre drivers via the crossover at 2600 Hz. The separate crossover frequency at 250 Hz integrates the additional bass drivers into the lower frequency range. The result is a design that combines a slim cabinet with a specified frequency response extending down to 29 Hz.

The speaker has a sensitivity of 90 dB and a specified impedance of more than 4 Ohm. Scansonic recommends a high-quality amplifier rated at more than 50 W. Amplifier selection is therefore a relevant part of the setup when making use of the speaker's dynamic capabilities.

Braced bass reflex cabinet with adjustable feet:

The MB5 B is built around a curved and heavily braced bass reflex cabinet with carbon reinforcements. The solid cabinet construction supports the operation of the speaker drivers, while the bass reflex principle forms part of the design for reproducing low frequencies.

Despite its slim front, each speaker measures 118.5 x 17.8 x 31.9 cm (H x W x D) and weighs 25 kg. Adjustable aluminium feet allow the speaker position to be fine-tuned. The MB5 B is available in silk black, silk white or walnut.
