Large 3-way speaker for music and home cinema:

The Scansonic HD MB8B is a large floorstanding speaker developed for sound reproduction with deep bass, high dynamics and a wide frequency range. Its 3-way configuration combines one quasi-ribbon tweeter, two 5.25" midrange drivers and two 8" bass drivers. This combination makes the MB8B particularly suitable for larger rooms and home cinema systems, where the speaker can deliver high sound pressure levels while extending down to 34 Hz at -6 dB.

The two large bass drivers operate in a bass reflex cabinet with three ports. This provides the MB8B with a solid foundation in the lower frequencies, while the dedicated midrange drivers handle the range between the crossover frequencies at 400 Hz and 2800 Hz. The result is a design where each type of driver operates within a carefully defined frequency range.

Quasi-ribbon tweeter with very low moving mass:

At the top of the MB8B is a quasi-ribbon tweeter in which a Kapton foil with an integrated voice coil forms the moving element. According to the manufacturer, this construction has approximately 50 times less mass than a conventional dome tweeter. The low mass allows the diaphragm to respond quickly to changes in the signal and is designed with a focus on detailed and natural reproduction of high frequencies.

The midrange and bass drivers use moulded, woven carbon fibre. The drivers have been custom-developed by the Raidho engineering team rather than using standard off-the-shelf components. The choice of materials and construction is intended to provide dynamic reproduction capable of keeping pace with the fast ribbon tweeter throughout the speaker's operating range.

Rigid cabinet and carefully tuned crossover:

The MB8B follows construction principles from Raidho, with a focus on a rigid cabinet and a crossover designed to make the different drivers work together as a coherent 3-way speaker. The crossover frequencies are set at 400 Hz and 2800 Hz, distributing the signal between the bass, midrange and tweeter drivers.

The cabinet combines a slender design with substantial physical dimensions. Including the feet, each speaker measures 145 x 35.5 x 49 cm (H x W x L) and weighs 45 kg. Scansonic HD recommends a quality amplifier with a minimum output of 100 W for the MB8B. The speaker has a sensitivity of 88 dB and a specified impedance of 4 Ohm. The MB8B is designed and built in Denmark and is available in black or walnut.
